The Promised Land:

Who Deserves It?
An Islamic Perspective
Prof. Mahmoud Isma'il Saleh
“On that day the Lord made a covenant with Abram and said, "To your descendants I give this land, from the river of Egypt to the great river, the Euphrates…” (Genesis 15: 18)

When we read this covenant of God with Prophet Abraham (PBUH), two very essential questions come to mind: Does this mean the promise was (1) for the Israelites and Jews exclusively and (2) under any circumstances? These are the TWO most important questions which should have been asked by the pious Christians and others who have been misled to understand that this covenant will be fulfilled at the hands of the unpious Jews of the State of Israel.

Are the children of Jacob (Israel) the only descendants of Abraham?
First, we know that Abraham had more than two wives, from one of whom came some prophets like Saleh, in the North West of the Arabian Peninsula. The better known of Abraham’s descendants came from his two sons, Ishmael the elder and Isaac the younger son. Isaac was the father of Jacob (also called Israel) from whom descended the children of Israel and many prophets of God. From Ishmael descended the Arabs and Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).

It was Abraham and Ishmael who built the Ka’ba in Makkah. So the descendants of Abraham are not only the Jewish race (the Israelites), but they include the Arabs as well. I emphasize the Jewish race to exclude the followers of the Jewish religion of whom we are told more 95% are not descendants of Prophet Jacob, as proven by a study conducted by the British anthropologist James Fenton. These 95% of the Jewish settlers in Palestine are of mixed origins, many of whom are descendants of Khazar converts and others of mixed ethnic origins, including children of mixed marriages and a few converts. In fact, Zionism and almost all the leaders and major supporters of the movement are descendant of these Ashkenazim.

It is interesting to point out that the children of Prophet Moses himself are not Jews by the Jewish definition of a Jew 'being a child of a Jewess', since his first wife was the daughter of  Shu’aib of Madyan (North Arabia) and the other was of Ethiopic origin. The same is true of at least some of the children of Joshua, his successor, since he was married to Rahab the Canaanite.

Does the Divine Covenant apply to a particular race or group of people, regardless of their conduct or righteousness?

A very important point we should remember is the fact that due to the utmost just nature of God, His Divine Promise and Covenant apply only to true believers in Him and His commands, not to a particular race or group of people. For example, we read in the Qur’an, “And (remember) when his Lord tried Abraham with (His) commands, and he fulfilled them, He said: Surely I have appointed thee a leader for mankind; (Abraham) said: And of my offspring (will they be leaders)? He (God) said: My covenant includeth not wrong doers.” (2: 124)

In Chapter 11 of the Qur’an, we see the same Divine principle applied. When the disbelieving son of Noah was about to drown, Prophet Noah called to God: “Surely my son is of my household! Surely Thy promise is the Truth and Thou art the Most Just of Judges.” What was God’s answer? He told him, “O Noah! Lo! He is not of thy household; lo! He is of evil conduct, so ask not of Me that whereof thou hast no knowledge. I admonish thee lest thou be among the ignorant.” (11: 45-46)

Now with these two Divine declarations, can we still say that even if  Sharon and the other bloodthirsty Zionist criminals and assassins (Begin, Dayan …) were true descendants of Abraham (which they are not), does the Divine Covenant apply to them and their like!! Certainly not. For they are like the son of Noah “of evil conduct”.

To whom can we say the Divine Covenant with Abraham regarding the Promised Land applies
In answer to this, we can say that there are two conditions to be fulfilled for the Covenant to apply. First, it has to be descendants of Prophet Abraham. Secondly, they have to be true believers in God, who clearly obey His commands and do righteous deeds (not “wrong-doers or people of “evil conduct”), as can be seen from the above two cases mentioned in the Qur’an and from other evidence to be mentioned in the next few lines.

In the Chapter of Light (24) of the Qur’an we read: “Allah hath promised such of you as believe and do good works that He will surely make them to succeed (the present rulers) in the earth as He caused who were before them to succeed (others): and that He will surely establish for them their religion which He hath approved for them, and will give them in exchange safety after their fear…” (24:55)

Let us see which nation or community fulfills these two requirements. The answer is very clear. We read in the Qur’an, “Abraham was not a Jew, nor yet a Christian; but he was an upright man who had surrendered to God (was a Muslim), and he was not of the idolaters. Lo ! Those of mankind who have the best claim to Abraham are those who followed him and THIS PROPHET (MUHAMMAD) AND THOSE WHO BELIEVE (WITH HIM). And God is the Protecting Friend of the believers.” (3: 67-68).

It is obvious that the Divine Covenant with Abraham applies to the Prophet Muhammad (himself a pure descendant of Abraham through his son Ishmael) and his Arab followers (being also descendants of Prophet Abraham, as everybody should know). We know that Arabs of the desert can easily maintain their purity of lineage, since they were very meticulous in this regard and their chances of mixing with other races until the seventh century, and the spread of Islam, were very slim, unlike the case of the Jews who have been scattered all over the world and have been joined by many converts, especially from Central Asia (known as the Khazars); hence a few of them can claim to be an offspring of Abraham. Here we should also point out the clear difference between Israelite (a descendant of Porphet Jacob) and Israeli (a citizen of the Zionist state)>

It is interesting to note that the prophecy made by Jesus points to this fact in the following verse from Mathew: “Therefore I tell you that the kingdom of God will be taken from you and given to a people who will produce the fruit.” (Mathew 21: 43). We know for a fact that the Arabs are the closest in blood to the Israelites.

Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and his faithful Arab followers also fulfill the second requirement of being true believers in God and doers of righteous deeds.

How about the present Jews? Doesn’t the covenant with Abraham apply to them?

Let us find the answer from the Bible itself. In the Old Testament, after the strong condemnation of Jews for their wickedness, God tells them: “Therefore, I will surely forget you and cast you out of my presence along with the city I gave to you and your fathers. I will bring you everlasting disgrace – everlasting shame that will not be forgotten.” (Jeremiah 23: 40) There are many similar Divine declarations throughout the Old Testament.
In the New Testament, among the many declarations of God’s wrath on the sinful Jews who malignantly accused Virgin Mary of adultery and tried to crucify her son, Jesus Christ, we read the prophecy made by Jesus who says: “Therefore I tell you that the kingdom of God will be taken from you and given to a people who will produce the fruit.” (Mathew 21: 43).

One can clearly see this type of evil-doers who deserved Divine wrath and everlasting disgrace cannot inherit the kingdom of God or receive His special favors.

When do we expect the Covenant to be fulfilled?

To me the answer is that it has already been fulfilled at the hands of the second Righteous Caliph, Omar ibn al-Khattab who received the key to Jerusalem from its Patriarch in 638 and during whose reign both Egypt and Iraq were captured within the span of a few years. For some God-fearing descendants of Prophet Abraham (PBUH) -- the Muslim Arabs -- are the first nation that has ever ruled the area between the river Euphrates and the river of Egypt and beyond. since its capture from the Byzantine Romans and the Persians in the seventh century of the Christian era. Muslims will be ruling the area (God-willing) forever, as long as they observe their duty to God the Almighty and follow His commandments.”
